PocketJet 3/3Plus - Printing from a Symbian EPOC Device

Symbian was established as a private independent company in June 1998 and is owned by Ericsson, Nokia, Panasonic, Motorola, Psion, Samsung Electronics, Siemens and Sony Ericsson. Among the primary goals of this consortium is to provide a standard operating system and development tools for use with data-enabled cell phones or PDA devices. The Operating System used by the Symbian devices is commonly referred to as EPOC32 for use with the Psion Series 5 and later machines. Various revisions of the EPOC operating system are commonly referred to as ERx, where “x” is the version number.

  • ER5 devices are primarily PDA’s which may include devices such as the revo, revo Plus, series 7, series 5mx and netbook.
  • ER6 devices include devices such as the Nokia 92xx communicator phones.

Pentax Symbian print drivers for EPOC ER5 and ER6 support both the Pentax PocketJet 3 and PocketJet 3Plus printers. They can be found on the CD that came with your printer or downloaded here.

PocketJet 3/3Plus - Printing from Windows Mobile Handhelds (Pocket PC, Windows CE, CE.NET, etc.)

Confused by the terms “Windows Mobile”, “Handheld PCs”, “Pocket PCs”, and “Windows CE”? “Window Mobile “ is the brand name Microsoft uses for the operating system and software it developed for handheld devices. Windows Mobile sits on top of the Windows CE core embedded operating system. The Windows Mobile OS and applications are “embedded” programs, which means that Microsoft licenses them to companies that manufacture the handheld, such as Dell, Toshiba or Hewlett-Packard. The paragraphs below define the different device types, and how to enable printing from each of them.

Defining the Devices and Printing Support

Handheld PC
From the beginning, Microsoft’s operating system for mobile devices was called “Windows CE” and the first device released using this OS was called a “Handheld PC”. They were “mininotebook” computers with a clam-shell design and a small keyboard. The original models of the Handheld PC came with a built-in suite of Microsoft applications similar to those found on the Pocket PC,(see below) but modified to take advantage of the different screen size and the keyboard input.

Handheld PCs are still available through Itronix, NEC, Psion Teklogix, and other vendors. A few models still come with the suite of Microsoft applications mentioned above. But some of the newer Handheld PCs based on the Windows CE.NET Version 4.2 operating system do not.

  • Handheld PC Windows CE Print Driver Availability
Pentax® provides a driver for Windows CE and Window CE.NET Handheld PC devices. This driver supports both the Pentax PocketJet® 3 and PocketJet® 3Plus printers. The driver is located on the CD that came with your printer and can be downloaded here.

Note: Field Software also offers a variety of printing options for the Handheld PC Windows CE. Please visit them at www.fieldsoftware.com for more information.

Pocket PC
Pocket PC is a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) that fits in the palm of your hand and is powered by a rechargeable battery that allows the user to use the device for at least a full day (in most situations) before recharging. Information is entered into the pocket PC with a small pen-like “stylus” which is used with the color “touch screen”. The Pocket PC was originally introduced in April of 2000. The Pocket PC is based on Windows Mobile for Pocket PC software, which includes the Pocket PC operating system along with productivity and entertainment software, and set up/configuration utilities, all from Microsoft. Different manufacturers develop Pocket PCs, but they all have many similarities.

Pocket PC Phone Edition
Pocket PC Phone Edition is a Pocket PC with a mobile phone built into it that allows the user to make phone calls and connect to wireless data services. In addition to standard Pocket PC applications, the built-in software includes a dialer application that supports the mobile phone capability.

  • Pocket PC Print Application Availability
The Pocket PC Windows Mobile (built on Windows CE OS) does not provide printing capability directly from the integrated applications and requires printing support from a third party accessory printing utility. Pentax is pleased to inform you that the Pentax PocketJet printer family is supported by a number of accessory printing utility products provided by Field Software.

Pentax has partnered with Field Software to provide a free trial version of each of the accessory printing utilities provided by Field Software. Trial versions of the software can be found on the Pentax Driver CD that came with your printer and can be downloaded here. Pentax would like to encourage PocketJet owners to try each of the “trial” versions before deciding what printing application best fits their printing needs.

Software developers are encouraged to print-enable their application by contacting Field Software for a developer’s tool kit.

Note: Pocket PC 2002 (and higher) has support for printer driver architecture through Windows CE. This will NOT alleviate the need to use Field Software for the integrated software application however, it does allow third party software developers to build printing into their application by using Windows CE. The Pentax Windows CE driver must be installed on the Pocket PC when printing from a third party software application that takes advantage of the printer driver architecture (Windows CE).

PocketJet Family - Printing from a MAC OS X Operating System Device

Pentax provides a Mac driver that supports printing to the PocketJet 200, II, 3 and 3Plus printers with Mac OS X Jaguar (10.2.8), Mac OS X Panther (10.3.5 or later). The driver can be found on the CD that came with your printer or you can download it here.

For Mac OS X Jaguar (10.2.8), ESP Ghostscript should be installed. Due to a bug in Mac OS X Jaguar, certain "carbon" applications will not produce any output when printing with the PocketJet driver (or any CUPS-raster driver). Installing ESP Ghostscript will work around this bug. ESP Ghostscript is distributed as a separate installer package and should have been included with the PocketJet installer. Mac OS X Jaguar users should install ESP Ghostscript first, and then install the PocketJet driver.

For Mac OS X Panther (and later) no additional software is required.

A user-friendly interface as well as a Mac OS User Guide for the PocketJet family of printers is provided with the driver.

Connecting the Pentax PocketJet Using a Mac OS X Device
The PocketJet 3 and 3Plus each have a built-in USB port. Plug the small end of the USB cable into the printer and plug the wider end of the cable into an open USB port on the Mac. The PocketJet II and 200 have a optional USB adapters that are sold separately.

PocketJet Family - Printing from a Linux Operating System Device

Pentax supports 2 solutions for Linux--LPD and CUPS. Each solution supports printing to the PocketJet 200, II, 3, and 3Plus printers.

These drivers were developed in accordance with the GNU General Public License. All source code used to build the drivers and utility programs is included in each driver package, allowing them to be freely modified to match a different Linux-based target platform, such as embedded Linux systems with PowerPC processors..

The drivers can be found on the CD that came with your printer or you can download them here.

Only one spooler may be running at one time. So, you should choose only one of these solutions and stick with it. However, RedHat 9.0 and likely other Linux distributions provide a means to switch between CUPS and LPRing pretty easily. So, it is possible to install both drivers onto the same computer and try them both out and decide which one you prefer.

1) LPD/LPRing Solution

LPD is the "Line Printer Daemon". It is an old-but-reliable standard print spooler available on most Linux and Unix systems.

This solution includes a GUI program ("PocketJet Control Center", or "PJCC") which will allow installing the driver, configuring the printer(s) for use with the LPD/LPRing spooler, and specifying printer settings. This PJCC program is distributed as a "StarPack", so it includes everything needed to get started.

This solution may be used stand-alone at the command line, if desired, in which case the LPD spooler is not used. This makes it useful for developing an embedded-Linux printing system which may not have a spooler installed.

This driver will print either PostScript, PBM, or Text-only data. PostScript printing requires the existence of GhostScript. Text-only data mode is supported ONLY with the PocketJet 3/3Plus printers; text-mode is very convenient if trying to print out text files from the command line.

2) CUPS (Common Unix Printing System) Solution

CUPS is a relatively new printing architecture. In fact, Macintosh selected this spooler architecture for use with their OSX operating system. This solution is actually the same solution as for Mac OSX. It requires that the CUPS printing system is installed and functional. It cannot be used standalone at the command line like the LPD solution. The CUPS solution is a bit more difficult to install, but it may print graphic and website data faster than the LPD solution, and it provides a some additional imaging features, such as "Mirror" and "Negative" printing.

Connecting the Pentax PocketJet Using a Linux Device

  • The PocketJet 3 and PocketJet 3Plus each have a built-in USB and IRDA ports. The PocketJet II and 200 have optional Parallel cable or USB, Serial, or Infrared adapter cables that are sold separately.
  • NOTE: It is our understanding that the CUPS solution will not work with IRDA since this requires a functional IRDA "backend" filter, which is still in development by the folks at CUPS.
PocketJet 200 - Printing from a Palm Operating System Device

Software developers are encouraged to print-enable their application by contacting Stevens Creek at www.stevenscreek.com for a developer’s tool kit.

PocketJet 200 - Printing from a Psion Workabout Device

SIBO operating system is the operating system that supports the Workabout family of products and is exclusive to Psion Teklogix products. (This operating system is commonly incorrectly referred to as EPOC 16 OS).

The Pentax Workabout driver supports the Pentax PocketJet® 200 printer only. This driver can be found on the CD that came with your printer and can be downloaded here. The driver includes a “User Interface Application” as well as a “Driver Application” that may be used as a command line program. Both driver applications will print any TEXT file.

Connecting the Pentax PocketJet to the Workabout

  • IR (Infrared) cable
  • Serial Cable: there are two forms of serial connection to the Workabout: 1. Connecting directly to the Workabout requires the Pentax serial 4’ cable (part number 203252) this cable is a 57600 baud cable. 2. Connecting to a cradle requires the serial cable to be at 19200 baud. This requires a “special” order from the customer to take the current serial 4’ cable (part number 203252 version 553 or higher) and adjust this cable to a baud rate of 19200. Please contact the Pentax Sales or Technical Support at 1-800-543-6144 for this solution.

Note: Software developers may contact Pentax at (1-800-877-0155) or techinfo@pentax.com to receive an SDK (Software Development Kit) that contains the source code needed to support the PocketJet 200 printer directly from the software application.
