Vehicle Inspection Service
Adrian McCarthy, Head of Operations (Inspector Services) for the RAC in Feltham sums up the success: "Customers get a much more professional service based on a clear, legible report and we get more efficient and accurate operation thanks to the mobile solution using the Pentax PocketJet printers."

Greater Efficiency with the Pentax PocketJet

Challenge:

Administration of inspection forms was becoming a growing problem with RAC with 170 Vehicle Inspectors checking the dozens of elements that make a car roadworthy, then filling out inspection forms in all weather conditions. Each inspector has different handwriting - sometimes difficult to understand - and each uses different terminology and descriptions for each aspect of the inspected vehicle. When this is multiplied by the 500,000 inspections undertaken annually, the size of the problem becomes apparent.

Application: Improve the administration of Royal Automobile Club (RAC) Vehicle Inspection Service for consumers, offering a comprehensive care inspection facility.

Solution:

RAC decided to standardize the inspection process by going digital with Casio PA2400 hand-held PCs and giving field workers a portable data-capture unit that could print out paper copies of inspections under a wide range of adverse conditions. This is where the Pentax PocketJet outperformed others, being robust, inexpensive to operate and compact. Because the Pentax PocketJet uses direct thermal printing, it produces clean, high quality printing with no mess or expensive ink dyes unlike thermal transfer printers.

After a half-day of training, inspectors were up and running with the new, automated system. A recent RAC survey of its Inspectors reported a 95% satisfaction rating - up from 75% the previous year, proving the efficiency of the new system.
