Serial

There are two different optional serial cables available, one for use with a PDA (“Personal Digital Assistant”) device (such as Windows CE, PocketPC, Palm, Psion, RIM), and one for use with a PC or Laptop:

For the PocketJet II, these cables are both optional.

For the PocketJet200, the “serial Kit” will contain the PDA cable described below.

1.    6 inch PDA serial cable: PocketJet II/200 has an optional 6" cable for use with Windows CE, Psion, Palm, and RIM Blackberry. This cable actually converts serial data to parallel. It requires the following settings: "baud rate" is 57600, "Data Bits" is 8, "Stop Bits" is 1, and "Parity" is None.

This cable is intended to connect to the “synchronization cable or cradle” supplied with your PDA. It will not connect directly to a PC or PDA. Every PDA seems to have a different serial port connector on it, but most all provide a cable or cradle to connect to the serial port on your PC, which is standard. So, instead of providing a different cable for every PDA, we provide just a single cable which will connect to all of them.

We have 2 versions of this cable. Version 1 supports only "Software" handshaking. Version 2 supports both "Software" and "Hardware" handshaking.

Version 1 works with most CE2.0 devices and Psion Series 5. But, it has problems with many CE2.1 or greater devices, unless the Port Buffer Size control in the WinCE driver is set to something small like 16. This cable is the ONLY serial cable that will work with a Nokia 92x0 Communicator phone.

Version 2 works with most CE2.0, CE2.1, and PalmOS devices, as well as the Psion Series 5, in one or both handshaking options. It does NOT work with the Nokia 92x0 Communicator phones. Experiment with your device to determine which method works best.

NOTE: A future version of this cable may be available which will allow “flash” programming, so any specific baud rate may be programmed to the cable if required. Contact Technical Support if you are interested in using a cable which requires non-default serial settings.

2.    4 foot PC Serial cable: PocketJet II/200 has an optional 4' cable for use with the serial port on Desktop or Laptop PC's. This cable actually converts serial data to parallel.

It requires the following settings:

"baud rate" is 57600, "Data Bits" is 8, "Stop Bits" is 1, and "Parity" is None. Serial handshaking is Software (Xon/Xoff) only with older versions of this cable. However, the latest version of this cable also allows “Hardware” flow control (RTS/CTS) in addition to Xon/Xoff.

NOTE: The latest version of this cable we are now shipping supports “flash” programming, so any specific baud rate may be programmed to the cable if required. Contact Technical Support if you are interested in using a cable which requires non-default serial settings.
