Installing the PocketJet 3 Windows 95,98,Me Driver

Note for users with the Bluetooth printer model only:

Pentax recommends that you use the Bluetooth Device Management software provided with your computer or Bluetooth-enabling hardware to establish a Serial Port Profile (SPP) connection to your PocketJet printer BEFORE you begin the driver installation process.

If you require assistance with this, please go to http://www.pentaxtech.com/Bluetooth for information that describes some procedures for establishing this connection using various 3rd party Bluetooth Manager software programs that Pentax has tested. Please refer to your Bluetooth device manufacturer documentation if you do not find your device listed.

Once you have established the connection to the printer, make a note of which COM port (e.g. “COM6:”) has been selected for use with your PocketJet printer. If more than one port is specified, note the one that is used for OUTGOING communication. You will be asked to select this COM port during the installation process. It may be necessary to REBOOT your computer after you have made this SPP connection in order for the COM port to show up as a port that can be selected.

Once you have created this SPP connection, made a note of the COM port to be used for OUTGOING communication, and rebooted your computer, then follow the instructions below for installing the driver.

To Install a driver downloaded from the Pentax website:

1.    Extract all files from the downloaded ZIP file to a folder on your computer. Refer to this folder as <folder>.

2.    Follow instructions below, beginning with using the Auto Install method.

3.    When following instructions below, use <folder> instead of <CD Drive> and <My Computer> instead of <CD>

To install driver from the Installation CD:

Method 1: To Install Using “Auto Install” program (PJ3-Install-Win9xMe.exe or PJ3BT-Install-Win9xMe.exe):

1.    Place the Installation CD into <CD Drive>

2.    Using Windows Explorer, browse the CD to find the folder: <CD Drive>:\<PJ3> or <PJ3BT>\Win9xMe

3.    Double-click “PJ3-Install-Win9xMe.exe” or “PJ3BT-Install-Win9xMe.exe”

4.    Follow the on-screen instructions to setup the printer as desired

5.    To customize the printer settings to non-default behavior, refer to links below regarding Custom Features.

Note 1: For USB port installation, the “Auto Install” program will not actually install the driver. However, it will give you information to help you to install the driver using “Plug and Play”, which will use the Microsoft “Add New Hardware Wizard”. The “Auto Install” program will install the driver for use with the Infrared port.

Note 2: If the “auto install” program is unable to locate the Microsoft Universal Printer Driver files on your computer, a message will appear requesting the use of the Add Printer Wizard. In this case, refer to the following instructions for using the “Add Printer Wizard” to install the driver.

Method 2: To Install using “Add Printer Wizard”:

NOTE: The “Add Printer Wizard” method requires you to select the port. For Infrared usage, the port should already be available. For USB usage, the proper USB00x port will not appear in the list until you plug the printer into the port and turn the power on, which will then start the Microsoft Plug and Play installation process.

If you have Windows Me, the USB port will be added to the system automatically, and then the Add New Hardware wizard will appear trying to install the printer driver. If you prefer, you may cancel the Add New Hardware and use the Add Printer Wizard instructions below. You will need to select a port called “USB00x” that matches the port that was added automatically, where “x” will usually be the highest number available. Otherwise, if you use the Add New Hardware wizard, it will automatically select the proper USB00x port for you.

If you have Windows 98, you will first have to install the USB port as follows:

Installing the USB port for Windows 98:

1.    Place the Installation CD into <CD drive>

2.    Connect the printer to the USB port and turn the printer power ON

3.    The “Add New Hardware” wizard will appear.

4.    Choose the “Search” option

5.    Select “CD-ROM” to search for the file USBPRINT.INF on the CD. Or, if installing a downloaded driver, select “Specify a location” and locate the directory where you extracted the driver files.

6.    Complete the wizard, and “USB Printing Support” should be successfully installed.

Installing the printer driver using the “Add Printer Wizard”:

1.    Place the Installation CD into <CD drive>

2.    Choose Start:Settings:Printers

3.    Double-click "Add Printer"

4.    Click "Next"

5.    Select "Local Printer" and "Next" (This step is not required on all versions of Windows 95/98/Me)

6.    Choose "Have Disk..."

7.    Choose "Browse", select "<CD Drive>:\<PJ3> or <PJ3BT>\WIN9xMe" directory, select "PJ3.INF" or “PJ3BT.INF”, click on "OK", and "OK" again

8.    It now should say "Pentax PocketJet 3". Click "Next"

9.    Follow the on-screen instructions to setup the printer as desired

10.  You will be prompted to "Insert your Windows 95/98/Me CD" when trying to install ICONLIB.DLL, UNIDRV.DLL, and UNIDRV.HLP. (NOTE: WinMe typically does not require this step)

a.    If you have your Windows 95/98/Me CD or diskettes, insert them into the appropriate drive. Then, click OK.

b.    If you do NOT have your 95/98/Me installation CD-ROM or diskettes, the required files are probably already on your system and do not need to be reinstalled. Choose "Skip File" instead. You will need to repeat the "Skip File" selection three times for each of the three UNIDRV files being installed.

c.     If you have tried (b) and the driver does not work because these files are not on your system, please contact Technical Support

11.  If "Print Test Page" has been chosen in Step #9 the printer should now be printing IF the PocketJet is connected to the output device, printer is turned on, and paper has been inserted into the printer.

12.  To customize the printer settings to non-default behavior, refer to links below regarding Custom Features.

To Uninstall:

1.    Choose Start:Settings:Printers

2.    Click once on the Pentax PocketJet 3 icon to highlight it.

3.    Choose File:Delete, and click OK when prompted to remove the files.
