Installing the PocketJet 3Plus Windows Vista Driver

Note for users with the Bluetooth printer model only:

Pentax recommends that you use the Bluetooth Device Management software provided with your computer or Bluetooth-enabling hardware to establish a Serial Port Profile (SPP) connection to your PocketJet printer BEFORE you begin the driver installation process.

If you require assistance with this, please go to http://www.pentaxtech.com/Bluetooth for information that describes some procedures for establishing this connection using various 3rd party Bluetooth Manager software programs that Pentax has tested. Please refer to your Bluetooth device manufacturer documentation if you do not find your device listed.

Once you have established the connection to the printer, make a note of which COM port (e.g. “COM6:”) has been selected for use with your PocketJet printer. If more than one port is specified, note the one that is used for OUTGOING communication. You will be asked to select this COM port during the installation process. It may be necessary to REBOOT your computer after you have made this SPP connection in order for the COM port to show up as a port that can be selected.

Once you have created this SPP connection, made a note of the COM port to be used for OUTGOING communication, and rebooted your computer, then follow the instructions below for installing the driver.

To Install a driver downloaded from the Pentax website:

1.    Extract all files from the downloaded ZIP file to a folder on your computer. Refer to this folder as <folder>.

2.    Follow instructions below, beginning with using the Auto Install method.

3.    When following instructions below, use <folder> instead of <CD Drive> and <My Computer> instead of <CD>

To install driver from the Installation CD:

Method 1: To Install Using “Auto Install” program (PJ3plus-Install-Vista.exe or PJ3plusBT-Install-Vista.exe):

1.    Place the Installation CD into <CD Drive>

2.    Using Windows Explorer, browse the CD to find the folder: <CD Drive>:\<PJ3plus> or <PJ3plusBT>\Vista

3.    If you are running 32-bit Windows Vista, browse into the “x86” folder. If you are running 64-bit Vista, browse into the “amd64” folder.

NOTE: If you are unsure whether you have 32-bit or 64-bit Vista, then just try each one. The SETUP program will detect your OS version and it will only allow installing onto the appropriate version. If you see a failure message, try the other SETUP program.

4.    Double-click the “Auto Install” program, “PJ3plus-Install-Vista.exe” or “PJ3plusBT-Install-Vista.exe”

5.    Follow the on-screen instructions to setup the printer as desired

6.    [Bluetooth printer only] If you see a Digital Signature Warning message, click “Continue Anyway”. The driver for the Bluetooth printer is IDENTICAL to the Digitally Signed driver used with the non-Bluetooth model.

7.    To customize the printer settings to non-default behavior, refer to links below regarding Custom Features.

Note:

·      For USB port installation on Windows Vista, the “Auto Install” program will pre-install the driver files to the folder C:\PENTAX\PocketJet3plus\DriverFiles on your hard drive, and connecting the USB cable will cause the driver to be installed automatically. Once the system has successfully installed the driver and print queue, you may delete the files that were pre-installed if you wish. However, if you do so, and then later delete the print queue, you will need to run the installer again to install the driver. So, it is probably best to leave these files on your system.

·      For Infrared and Bluetooth port installation on either Windows Vista, the Auto Install program will install the driver by launching the Add Printer Wizard.

Method 2: To Install using “Add Printer Wizard”:

NOTE: The “Add Printer Wizard” method requires you to select the port. For Infrared port usage, the port should already be available, so follow the instructions below.

For USB port usage, the proper USB00x port will not appear in the list until you plug the printer into the port and turn the power on, which will then start the Microsoft “Found New Hardware Wizard” to install the printer driver. If you prefer, you may “cancel” the “Found New Hardware” wizard at this time and use the “Add Printer Wizard” as per the instructions below. However, you may have to discover which USB00x port to select based on “trial and error”, though usually it will be the port with the largest number. Otherwise, if you use the “Found New Hardware Wizard” to install the driver, it will select the proper USB00x port automatically and you will not need to follow the instructions below.

1.    Place the Installation CD into <CD drive>

2.    Go to Control Panel->Printers

3.    Click "Add a Printer"

4.    Select "Add a local printer"

5.    Click "Next"

6.    Select Port and click "Next"

7.    Choose "Have Disk..."

8.    Choose "Browse", select "<CD Drive>:\<PJ3plus> or <PJ3plusBT>\Vista" directory, select "PJ3PLUS.INF" or “PJ3plusBT.INF”, click on "Open" and "OK".

9.    It now should say "Pentax PocketJet 3plus", click "Next"

10.  Follow the on-screen instructions to setup the printer as desired. At the final setup screen, choose "Finish".

11.  If "Print Test Page" has been chosen in Step #10 the printer should now be printing IF the PocketJet is connected to the output device, the printer is turned on, and paper has been inserted into the printer.

12.  To customize the printer settings to non-default behavior, refer to links below regarding Custom Features.

To Uninstall:

1.    Choose Start:Settings:Printers.

2.    Click once on the Pentax PocketJet 3 icon to highlight it.

3.    Choose File Menu->Delete, and click OK when prompted to remove the files.

4.    Choose File Menu->Run as Administrator->Server Properties, go to the Drivers page, select PocketJet 3plus driver, and choose Remove.
